BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team is 1-1 in District 8-3A play.

The Lady Dawgs defeated Gatesville 41-34 on Jan. 7 but lost 50-28 to Brownwood in the District 8-3A opener Jan. 3.

Burnet led Gatesville 12-8 after the first period and 24-15 at the half. The Lady Dawgs guards applied full-court pressure that took the Lady Hornets out of their offensive rhythm. In addition, Burnet was able to score baskets from its fast break.

Burnet head coach Doug Messer made an effort to give guards Riley Scott and Danielle Lindley more rest during the game. He believes that was key in building a 15-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

“It’s hard to play 32 minutes without having much of a break,” he said.

In the final three minutes, Gatesville was able to get steals that it turned into points.

Against Brownwood, the Lady Dawgs led 12-6 after the first quarter but trailed 22-19 at halftime. The Lady Lions outscored Burnet 12-2 in the third period and 16-7 in the fourth.

Messer complimented the performances of the Burnet posts against Brownwood. Now, he’s trying to get the guards and the posts to play well in the same game.

“That’ll be like a beast for us,” he said.

That could come as soon as Jan. 10, when Burnet travels to Liberty Hill (1-1 in District 8-3A).

The two teams bring out the best in each other, and Messer believes this contest won’t be any different.

“I think our guards will have a big impact if they can handle the pressure,” he said. “I think we’re going to be fine. They’re going to bring their A game. I think it’ll be a good game.”
