CEDAR PARK — The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost 81-61 to Cedar Park in its District 25-4A opener Dec. 31.

The Mustangs played well for 26 minutes, head coach Neil Laminack said.

“We got really good minutes from everybody,” he said.

Marble Falls trailed 25-15 after the first quarter.

Laminack said the Timberwolves are separating themselves from the rest of the district members.

“I think they will go undefeated,” he said. “After that, the middle of the pack is very thick.”

The schedule doesn’t get easier for the Mustangs. Marble Falls has its district home-opener against Leander Rouse on Jan. 3.

The Raiders should challenge Cedar Park for the district crown, Laminack said.

“All the (other teams) are very similar,” he said. “I think the way the middle of the district is is everybody will beat everybody.”

The loss came on the heels of the Mustangs finishing second with a 5-1 record at the Wimberley Texan Hoop Fest on Dec. 26-28.

Marble Falls defeated Cuero 59-47, Lockhart 49-46, St. Mary’s Hall 71-65, San Antonio Cole 55-33 and Austin Reagan 71-64. They lost 77-60 to Elgin.

“I thought we would play well (at the tournament), but we really had to gut out a few games,” Laminack said. “That made us better. We had more guys involving themselves in the action.”
