MARBLE FALLS — About the only downside to the Faith Academy girls basketball team’s 46-27 over Austin St. Andrew’s on Dec. 17 was it could have been by a larger margin.
And that’s only because so many of the Lady Flames’ shots weren’t falling through the basket.
“I don’t think we played so bad,” Faith head coach Jerry English said. “We shot so bad. We shot a little more than 20 percent in the first half.”
The Lady Flames finished the game making 17 of 55 shots for 31 percent.
English said he thought the players’ energy levels were high, and he liked their effort and the execution of plays, including how his team attacked the basket. The only challenge was finishing the play with a bucket.
“If one starts missing layups, all the sudden, everyone starts missing layups,” he said. “I think you feed off each other. I really liked our energy.”
After playing to a 2-2 tie, Faith went on a 13-2 run to end the first quarter. The Lady Flames outscored St. Andrew’s 11-2 in the second period for a 26-6 lead at the half.
English noted this game was one of junior guard Sierra Brinkley’s best because of her defense and getting to the rim by driving to the hoop or grabbing rebounds.
Another highlight was the play of sophomore post Hannah Cozby. She is active on the offensive end, especially moving without the ball and resetting on the low block. English said her defense is getting better.
“If Hannah ever started to believe in herself as much as I believe in her and as much as her teammates believe in her,” he said, “she’ll be a load.”
