MARBLE FALLS — Area fire departments battled the cold as they fought a house fire Dec. 6 at the intersection of Seventh Street and Avenue E.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but officials said several pets were killed.

The fire was reported about 1:45 p.m.

It was an alert Cottonwood Shore Volunteer Fire Department firefighter driving through Marble Falls who noticed a few puffs of smoke coming from the home that he first thought was from a fireplace.

But as he made it to the next block, the smell hit him.

“It didn’t smell like a fire in a fireplace does,” Cottonwood Shores Fire Chief Deavon DeLancey said.

DeLancey immediately turned around and returned to the home. He raced up to the front door and knocked on it. He noticed the glass door was black. Realizing this wasn’t right, DeLancey went around to the back of the home, where he pounded on the back door.

Again there was no answer, but DeLancey could hear the smoke detector going off inside. He called 9-1-1, and Marble Falls Fire Rescue responded along with Horseshoe Bay Fire Rescue, Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department, Marble Falls Area EMS and Marble Falls police.

When Marble Falls Fire Rescue Chief Johnny Caraway and a fire truck arrived, they found the structure fully engulfed.

Caraway said the fire did extensive damage to the interior of the house. He confirmed that nobody was home at the time of the fire, but there were some pets inside.

As firefighters were still working the blaze, Caraway said it was too early to make a determination of the cause.

Caraway said the homeowner, who arrived at the scene as crews were still fighting the fire, told him the house was built in the early 1900s.

The cause remains under investigation.
