Marble Falls girls basketball begins own tourney with win against New Braunfels

MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team began its own American Bank of Texas Tournament with a 46-37 victory against New Braunfels on Nov. 21.

The Lady Mustangs (4-1) trailed the Lady Unicorns (2-2) 8-0 midway through the first quarter but got on the board after a free throw from senior forward Haley Stephens.

Marble Falls began putting together all the elements midway through the second period, ending the first half tied 24-24.

In the third quarter, the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Unicorns 14-5 for a 38-29 lead.

Marble Falls was able to maintain at least an eight-point lead throughout the final period.

“It felt like it kind of stalled a little bit,” Marble Falls head coach Chris Jost said about the Lady Mustangs’ play. “In previous games, we’ve had more flow. We’re playing jagged, kind of bumpy.”

When Marble Falls went on a three-game winning streak to begin the season, the team’s reserves were more productive on both ends of the floor. Against New Braunfels, the Lady Mustangs relied more on their starters.

In addition, the New Braunfels players rotated to the ball well, were aggressive in going for rebounds and played physical overall.

“That’s how Class 4A basketball is played,” Jost said. “We have to adjust to the physicality.”
