BULVERDE — The Faith Academy girls basketball team finished as the runner-up of the Bulverde Bracken Tournament on Nov. 16.
The Lady Flames fell 47-41 to Midland Christian in the championship game after beating Schertz John Paul II 47-36 and Grace Community 44-26.
“I was really pleased that we did make it to the finals,” Faith head coach Jerry English said. “I did not think we played well the whole tournament. We played ourselves into a better effort.”
Faith (3-1) has won this tournament numerous times, but English said he believes this year’s Midland Christian and last season’s Fort Bend Christian (41-4) were the two best opponents the Lady Flames have faced in the event.
“Midland Christian was far more advanced,” he said. “They made very few mistakes. They played a beautiful motion offense, played great defense, they were a great block-out team. They’re the type of team that can embarrass you.”
Meanwhile, the coach said the tournament helped his players and staff in many ways. For starters, they see the importance of developing depth, a task that happens simply by playing games and practicing.
“One of our big jobs is going to be trying to get our two freshmen to work,” he said. “They can help us. What I learned out of it is I found a baseline of where we are right now, what we need to reteach, what we need to go back over and get better at.”
