Burnet girls basketball squad comes back late for first-game victory vs. Comanche

FROM STAFF REPORTS

COMANCHE — Doug Messer couldn’t have had a better beginning to his tenure as the Burnet High School girls basketball coach.

The Lady Dawgs (1-0) defeated Comanche 62-57 on Nov. 5 to begin the season.

“That’s one of the things I told them,” Messer said. “How good it felt to start with a win. Comanche was quality.”

Burnet rolled to a 6-0 advantage, but Comanche responded to take 12-10 lead and maintained it until the fourth quarter.

That’s when the Lady Dawgs scored 28 points by taking advantage of their opportunities from the free-throw line and turning steals and rebounds into quick buckets.

“We started playing aggressively,” Messer said. “We turned our defense up and our pressure. We just turned the tide on them and started playing the way we needed to play.”

Burnet has its home opener against Salado at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at The Doghouse, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.
