OBITUARY: John Worthington Phillips, 82, of Horseshoe Bay dies Oct. 2, 2013

John Worthington Phillips, 82, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, died Oct. 2, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Rachel (Crane) Phillips; stepmother, Martha Phillips; brother, Jerry Phillips; and sister, Pat Turner.
Born Nov. 5, 1930, in Columbia, Mo., John served in the Navy on the Destroyer USS Preston as a sonar man during the Korean War. He later attended the University of Missouri.
He married Rita Phillips in 1955, and, for 13 years, they lived together in New Brighton, Minn., where they raised daughters, Laura Phillips and Lisa Phillips. John was remarried in 1980 to CoraLee “Cory” and became stepfather to Cory’s daughter, Beth (Chanhassen) Leonard. The three lived in Arden Hills.
John had a long career with Deluxe Corp., where he last served as vice president of market research. He retired in 1985.
John was an avid golfer and took many road trips to see the country and the many friends he kept up with over the years. He was a skilled photographer and mastered the style of candid photography, documenting many wonderful casual moments in the lives of family and friends. He spent summers at his beloved lake home on Mound Lake in Minnesota until it was sold this August. There, he gardened, fished, entertained friends and tinkered in his workshop.
One of his many legacies to his children and grandchildren was his great love and respect for wildlife and nature.
He will be greatly missed.
John is survived by wife, Cory; daughters, Laura Phillips and husband Jeff Lanning of Stillwater, Minn., Lisa Phillips of Indianapolis and Beth Leonard and husband Steve; grandchildren, Rachel Kelly and Blakely Worthington Phillips-Powell; former wife, Rita Phillips of Minnetonka; and cat, Daisy May.
A service is 2 p.m. Dec. 23 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn.
