BURNET — In the end, Burnet High School got the coach it wanted after all.
During the spring, Burnet High School athletic director Kurt Jones said the department really liked Corey Bledsoe for the softball head coaching spot. But the challenge was that Bledsoe’s other sport is football.
At the time, Jones’ football staff was complete. But that didn’t stop him from contacting Bledsoe.
“I had talked to him a little bit prior to even knowing our softball job was open,” Jones said. “Early on, he was definitely a great candidate.”
But once Alfonso Chavez resigned as the softball head coach and some assistant football coaches resigned, Jones found he had room for Bledsoe.
The athletic director said Bledsoe guided the Bangs High School softball team to records of more than 20 wins and only single-digit losses. Bangs reached the second round of the Class 2A playoffs in 2012 and was the District 6-A runner-up in 2013.
“He’s highly organized and enthusiastic,” Jones said. “He brings a lot to the table. I think he’s going to be good for us and good for the softball program as well.”
One item on Bledsoe’s to-do list is to grow the softball program so it has varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads, Jones said.
“I think he’s the type of guy who builds excitement,” he said. “We found a great softball coach. We feel like he’s been a great hire.”
