BRISTOL, Ind. — Marble Falls High School graduate and target shooter Katie Bridges has earned two championships in the past few weeks.
She captured the Metric Position Champion on July 15, which makes her the Smallbore Metric national champion, and then came in first at the 4,800 Firecracker in Raton, N.M.
At the Metric Position Championship, Bridges shot a 2,357-130X to edge second-place finisher Michelle Bohren, who scored a 2,356-125X.
“She beat quite a few national champions and international competitors,” said her mother, Rhonda Bridges. “She did great. She won by one point.”
Even if Bohren had tied Katie Bridges’ score, the former Mustang still would have won the national title because she recorded more Xs in the bull’s eye of the target, Rhonda Bridges said.
“X is a center shot used for tiebreakers,” Rhonda Bridges said. “It still counts as a 10 but is a perfect center shot in the bull’s eye.”
In addition, Bridges was second in the national small bore 3-position championship by shooting a 2,250-79X.
The list of competitors was some of the most experienced rifle competitors in the United States, Rhonda Bridges said.
At the Firecracker 4,800, Bridges scored a 4,795-379X during the three-day event. She beat former Olympians Mike Anti, Lones Wigger and Josh Olsen.
Bridges is competing in the Smallbore National Championships until July 25.
