BURNET — It’s summer, and that means another trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament for Burnet High School on July 11-12.

“It’s definitely something the boys look forward to and work hard to achieve,” Bulldogs 7-on-7 coach Jon Huff said. “The boys’ big goal was to qualify as early as possible for the state tournament.”

The Bulldogs (28-2) are in Pool L and will face Booker at 2 p.m., Kountze at 4 p.m. and Kaufman at 6 p.m. July 11. All games are at the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park, 3005 CR 175 in Leander.

Booker is a member of Class 1A with an enrollment of 104 students.

“With a small school like that, they’re going to have a lot of kids going both ways,” Huff said. “You get gassed pretty quick.”

Kaufman has an enrollment of 998 students and is a Class 3A member, and Kountze is a member of Class 2A with an enrollment of 393.

Huff said the Bulldogs are predicted to win the pool and move on to the championship round, while the other two teams will be in the consolation bracket. The brackets are single elimination and will be played the morning of July 12 with consolation starting at 8 a.m. and the championship at 9 a.m. The final of the consolation bracket is 3 p.m., and the Division II championship contest is 4 p.m.

Burnet played for the state championship when 7-on-7 first began in the state in 2003. The Bulldogs were led by former standouts Stephen McGee and Jordan Shipley.

In 2010, the Bulldogs reached the finals of the consolation bracket.

Last season, Burnet lost in the championship semifinals to Graham.

“Playing in the state tournament and qualifying has definitely been something Burnet pushes for,” Huff said. “The boys grow accustomed to the tradition of going and duplicating what past teams have done.”
