Bertram names interim city utility director after termination due to missing property

BERTRAM — City leaders named an interim city utility director after the June 17 termination of director Chris Walker.

Mayor Dickie Allen said Walker’s termination was related to missing city property.

“Because it’s an ongoing investigation, I can’t say anything else,” he said during the city council’s June 25 regular meeting.

The council named John Copeland, already a city utility worker, as the interim director while the city is in the process of hiring someone.

The council met in executive session, and, afterward, council member Glen Hopkins made the motion to let Police Chief Tracy Weems “continue the ongoing city investigation about city property.”

Also during the June 25 meeting, the council discussed the city’s Meals on Wheels service. No action was taken, but the council talked about what its role could be in securing the future of the program that currently is operating from donations. The program has enough money to continue the service to 13 Bertram residents until Oct. 1.

With meals continuing for some time, many on the council felt more information is needed to make any sort of decision about what the city can do to support program.
