BURNET — The Burnet 4-H Horse Club and the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension are holding a horse-riding clinic June 5-6.
The clinic is for third-graders and older from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cody Orman Arena, 1301 Houston Clinton Drive.
Participants must bring their own horses and equipment needed to ride and clean up after the animals. A negative Coggins test is required, and stallions are not allowed. Students also should bring lunches.
The cost is $50 for both days or $30 for one day.
Burnet County extension agent Wade Hibler said riders should consider taking the clinic for a number of reasons.
“It’s care for the horse, foot care for the horse, health, skills,” he said about what will be taught. “The purpose is to help enhance skills. There will be someone to help you be as good as you can be with your animal.”
The clinic also will teach adjustment of equipment, safety and correct use of a body, horse-theft awareness and prevention, bit pressure, training maneuvers and showmanship.
One of the instructors is Jessica McDowell of the Texas A&M Equine Department, Hibler said.
This is the first time in two years the clinic has been offered.
“This is a great opportunity if you’ve never had formal training,” he said. “It’ll start with the basics. Take advantage.”
