BERTRAM — Bertram City Council members were updated on the status of about 30 fire hydrants in need of repair during a regular meeting May 28.

Utility director Chris Walker told the council four hydrants have been repaired in the city.

The city has set aside $40,000 from the general maintenance and operations fund for fire hydrant repair.

“We don’t believe the $40,000 will cover it all, but we hope it can make a substantial impact,” said City Secretary Evan Milliorn.

More money might be set aside during next year’s budget to continue work to fix the remaining hydrants, he said.

In a town with a population of just more than 1,000, the cost to repair the almost 30 old hydrants is a strain on an already tight budget.

“The council is extremely aware of the liability issues and safety concerns,” Milliorn said. “We feel their obligation that every single fire hydrant work and to capacity.”

In other action from the council meeting, Glen Hopkins was selected as mayor pro tem.
