Leander ties series with Marble Falls baseball; Game 3 on April 20

DANIEL CLIFTON-PICAYUNE EDITOR

LEANDER — The Leander baseball team only mustered three more hits than Marble Falls, but the Lions tied them together in such a way to outscore the visiting Mustangs, 9-2.

The Lions’ victory tied the District 25-4A series up 1-1 on April 19. The two teams take the field again April 20 at Scearce Fields in Marble Falls at 2 p.m. Marble Falls has already secured a playoff spot, but if the Mustangs win this series, they will take the district crown.

Leander jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as the Lions’ Garrett Venner and Joseph Sanchez each got a base hit off the Mustangs’ Cody Goodman.

Marble Falls got back one of those runs in the top of the second inning when Mike Richardson, who got on base on a walk, scored on a Joey Blackledge single. But then the Mustangs couldn’t muster another run until the top of the seventh inning.

Between the two Marble Falls runs, the Lions pounded out seven more of their own.

It wasn’t so much that Leander dominated the game as much as taking advantage of their base runners and a couple Mustang mistakes. Leander scored in four of the six innings they were at the plate.

Goodman stayed on the mound for two and two-thirds innings before Hunter Dooley relieved him. By the time Dooley came in, Leander was up 7-1.
