LEANDER — The Marble Falls High School softball team dominated every phase of its 5-0 win against Leander Rouse on March 19.

“It was one of our better games of the year,” Lady Mustangs head coach Tino Salazar said.

Senior Hayley Fishbeck got Marble Falls on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. In all, the Lady Mustangs recorded 12 hits.

“That really set the tone for us,” Salazar said. “We kept chipping away. I felt like we hit the ball really well compared to last week. Even our outs were hit hard.”

Fishbeck’s home run proved to be all the runs freshman pitcher Makenzie Carpenter needed to get the win.

And as the game wore on, Carpenter got stronger, Salazar said.

“She threw a lot of ground balls early that kept the defense involved,” he said. “If she’s dominating early, I think she’s working harder and throwing more pitches early. If you’re not getting the defense’s attention, they get lazy.”

By the sixth inning, Carpenter had thrown fewer than 90 pitches.

Next up is District 25-4A leader Dripping Springs and senior pitcher Brandi Needham. The Lady Mustangs haven’t beaten the Lady Tigers in seven years.

ON OFFENSE: RBIs – Amanda Thomas 1, Hailey Wooten 1, Hayley Fishbeck 1; hits – Tyler Oppenheim 3, Makenzie Carpenter 2, Thomas 2

ON DEFENSE: Winning pitcher Carpenter (13-4) 2 hits and 11 strikeouts

RECORDS: Marble Falls is 18-5 overall and 3-2 in District 25-4A.

UP NEXT: Marble Falls at Dripping Springs, 7 p.m. March 22 at the Sports and Recreation Park 27148 RR 12 in Dripping Springs
