Marble Falls softball team places 3rd at College Station tournament
COLLEGE STATION — The Marble Falls High School softball team placed third at the College Station ISD Tournament Feb. 28-March 2.
Marble Falls went 4-2 at the three-day event, including a 15-14 shootout victory against Nacadoches in the last game. The Lady Mustangs recorded 13 hits and overcame five errors for the victory.
Even though the Lady Mustangs finished pool play Feb. 28 with a 2-1 record, head coach Tino Salazar didn’t feel like his team had competed that well.
“I told (assistant coach Amanda) Carpenter that we needed one good game to get us going,” he said.
That happened in the 5-0 win against Round Rock Westwood on March 1 to start Gold Bracket play.
The Marble Falls softball team recorded eight hits and didn’t allow two errors result in runs for Westwood.
“I felt like that got us on a roll and got us going,” Salazar said. “We needed to play well.”
Salazar characterized the 4-3 loss to LaGrange as missed opportunities. In different innings, LaGrange withstood some hard hit balls and made the timely throw to end rallies that would have given the Lady Mustangs more runs. In all Marble Falls had six hits to LaGrange’s one.
One such missed opportunity was in the final inning when the bases were loaded with two outs. The batter hit the ball between the shortstop and the third baseman, who had to dive to clip the ball with her glove. That allowed the shortstop to pick up the ball and touch third base before the runner could get there to end the game.[tabs style=”default”] [tab title=”TOURNAMENT STATS”]AGAINST NACADOCHES: Offense – RBIs: Catie Whitecotton 4, Amanda Thomas 3; Winning Pitcher: Amanda Thomas (5-1) 14 runs off 11 hits with 6 strikeouts; Marble Falls committed five errors
