The Lady Mustangs defeated Wimberley 7-0 on Feb. 12 behind the pitching of freshman Makenzie Carpenter and the hitting of junior Amanda Thomas.
Carpenter threw a no-hitter and struck out 19 in her debut. Three batters put the ball in play, and only one reached base after a third-strike drop by the catcher.
“It was a good showing,” Marble Falls head coach Tino Salazar said. “(Carpenter) threw well. What I was happiest about was that she didn’t walk anybody.”
Thomas hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for the final run margin.
“We had some quality at-bats,” Salazar said.
The Lady Mustangs have to adjust defensively to their freshman pitcher, he said, noting that when a pitcher is so dominant, the rest of the players still have to be engaged in what is happening in the game because they don’t know when or if the ball is coming their way.
ON OFFENSE: RBI – Amanda Thomas 4 (3-run homer), Abby Henry, Hayley Fishbeck, Makenzie Carpenter
ON DEFENSE: Freshman pitcher Makenzie Carpenter throws no-hitter, 19 strikeouts
RECORDS: Marble Falls is 1-0.
