OBITUARY: Samuel Oliphant, 96, was petroleum engineer, restored antique cars
Samuel Curtis Oliphant died Feb. 6, 2013, at the age of 96. He leaves behind a legacy of professional and personal accomplishments.
Born on Nov. 9, 1916, in Harrisonburg, La., he moved to Texas, where he attended the University of Texas and received a Bachelor of Science in 1938 and a Master of Science in 1941, both in petroleum engineering.
He pursued a distinguished career as a petroleum engineer, serving as a senior vice president of Tenneco. After retirement, Sam continued to consult in the industry.
He collected and restored antique cars and was active in the Horseless Carriage Club of America for many years. In later years, he enjoyed life with his friends and family on Lake LBJ, where he was known as the one who could fix anything.
Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Patterson Oliphant; grandson Shawn Oliphant; and second wife, Alice Jane Redmon Oliphant.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jane Oliphant; son, Stephen Oliphant and wife Linda; daughter, Connie Welsch and husband Andy; and sister Mollie Oliphant. He also leaves a legacy of four grandchildren: Shannon Gordon, Samantha Fisher, Glenn Welsch and Allison Reimers; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at The Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge Road in Horseshoe Bay, with Pete Christy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Church at Horseshoe Bay.
