James D. Montz

James D. Montz, 85, of Horseshoe Bay died Oct. 5, 2012. He was born in 1927 in a suburb of New Orleans, La.
He was twice a widower in marriages to Ann Waguespack Montz for 31 years and to Ann Gaushell Montz for 20 years.
He grew up in Houston and attended the University of Texas at Austin for his freshman and sophomore years. He graduated from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and history. He was a teacher with the Christian Brothers for three years.
He served in the Army during the latter part of the Korean War and received his commission as an officer at graduation from the Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga. He remained for the balance of service time as a cadre officer at the school.
Afterward, he started his 31-year career with Prudential Insurance Co. of America, working in various managerial, administrative and executive positions. After retirement, he moved to Sugarland. In 1996, he moved to Horseshoe Bay.
He was a devout Catholic and became an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay. He served as head of the parish council for four years and, later, was head of the finance council for four years. He took joy in being a member of the church choir.
He played tennis up until his 85th year and took pleasure in duplicate bridge. He made many good friends from both activities. He also was involved with many charitable and social services over the years.
Survivors include sons Keith and David; daughter-in-law Johnna; grandchildren Derek, Taylor and Megan; sisters Mary Lee Francis and husband Doug Francis and Chell Ann Golla and husband Damian Golla; brother Rod Montz and wife Barbara; sisters-in-law Carolyn Michael and Louise Roemer; and many nieces and nephews.
A mass of celebration is 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church with a reception following at Quail Point.
