Herman “Boy” Howerts Jr., 91, of Buena Vista subdivision died Sept. 11, 2012, in Llano. He was born on July 25, 1921, in Beaumont to Herman and Lillie Howerts.

He married Alma Thompson in 1944.

After working for Humble Oil for several years, he and his wife moved to Buchanan Dam. They owned Rock ‘N’ Wood Cottages from 1957 to 1985. They retired to the Buena Vista subdivision.

He was instrumental in establishing the Buchanan Dam Lions Club, the Buchanan Dam Chamber of Commerce, the Buchanan Dam Volunteer Fire Department and the Cassie Volunteer Fire Department. He was a volunteer firefighter with Cassie for several years. He also helped establish the Buena Vista Neighborhood Watch Program and the biannual neighborhood barbecues.

Survivors include nieces and nephews and close friends Dave and Frieda Gresham and Ann Simon.

He was preceded in death his wife of 66 years; his parents; and sisters Roxanne and Jiggs.

A graveside service is 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cassie Volunteer Fire Department.
