Col. Foster G. Ramsey, 89, died April 29, 2012. He was born in Somerset, Pa., on April 12, 1923, to Oscar and Velma Ramsey.

The son of a coal mine foreman, he enlisted in the Army on Oct. 20, 1939, and was assigned to the Carlisle Barracks. During World War II, he served in New Guinea and participated in the invasion of the Philippine Islands on Leyte and Lingayen Gulf and in the liberation of Manila. In 1945, he received a combat zone direct commission, tech sergeant and second lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps, from Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He served in the Korean War in 1950 and 1951, attaining the ranks of captain and major colonel.

He retired from the military as executive officer of the Chief Surgeon’s Office, U.S. Army Pacific Theatre, on June 1, 1967, with 28 years of service.

After his retirement, he served as a nursing home director and then as a hospital administrator for Holy Cross Hospital for two years. In 1982, he retired with his wife of 65 years, Dovie Ramsey, on their ranch in Spicewood, where they had lived since 1963.

In addition to his wife, survivors include daughter Joan L. Killebrew; grandson Raymond Killebrew and wife Tracy; and great-grandchildren Jordan, Karissa and Sydney Killebrew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; sisters; and son Todd O. Ramsey.

A graveside service with full military honors is 1:30 p.m. May 3 at Fall Creek Cemetery in Spicewood.
