MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls High School sophomore Austin Ellis finished first at a bass tournament on Lake Marble Falls March 3.

Sophomore Shilo Nelson was second, and junior Collin Edwards was third. Edwards also caught the big bass weighing 8 pounds, 3 ounces.

Ellis, who won his third tournament in a row and fourth overall, said one of the reasons he was successful was because the females were laying eggs.

“They got really shallow, and you could see them,” he said. “When they get to that point, it’s really easy.”

Ellis’ total catch of five fish weighed 17 pounds, 4.2 ounces. His smallest fish was 3.5 pounds.

“It was a great tournament for all of us,” he said.

In all, 24 anglers and 12 boats participated in the tournament. Twenty students weighed in their catches of 42 bass totaling 109 pounds and 3.5 ounces.

RESULTS: 1, Austin Ellis, 17 pounds, 4.2 ounces (5 fish); 2, Shilo Nelson, 9 pounds, 7.4 ounces (5 fish); 3, Collin Edwards, 8 pounds, 9.9 ounces (2 fish); 4, Lane Amidon, 7 poiund, 8.6 ounces (3 fish); 5, Ben Stripling, 6 pounds, 2.9 ounces; 6, Hunter McNeese, 5 pounds, 5.3 ounces (3 fish), 7, Cole Van Brocklin, 4 pounds, 9.3 ounces (2 fish); 8, Chris Mata, 4 pounds, 7.9 ounces (2 fish); 9, Hunter Delz 4 pounds, 3.8 ounces (2 fish), 10, Nick O’Connor, 4 pounds 0.3 ounce (2 fish).

UP NEXT: Student Angler Federation Texas State Championship on Lake Lavon in Allen March 24-25. The event calls for teams of two with each team having its own boat and captain. Sponsor Lorna Ellis said the club is “in critical need of as many volunteer boat captains who can travel.” The club will provide fuel stipends and lodging for the trip, she said.
