Edith Gage
Edith Gage, 94, of Burnet and formerly of Sweetwater, died Dec. 17, 2010. She was born to Luther Virgil and Effie Delia (Gantt) DeShazo on April 30, 1917, in Hylton.
She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1934 and attended business school the following year to become a secretary. She also was a charter member of the first class at the Stenograph Institute in Abilene to learn shorthand machines. She worked as a secretary for a law office and for the City Development (Chamber of Commerce) until resigning her position to become a full-time mother and housewife.
She returned to work at banks, savings and loans, and also at the Nolan County Courthouse as a secretary to the county judge.
She retired in 1979 from the District Attorney’s Office.
She was a member of the Highland Heights Methodist Church since 1924. She was a member of the Sweetwater Business and Professional Women’s Club and Kingsland Kitchen Klunkers’ band.
She married Troy Dement April 22, 1939. They lived in the Hill Country and enjoyed the lakes and fishing. Her husband died in 1987.
After a short courtship, she married Clifton Gage on Nov. 26, 1994. They kept a home on Lake LBJ and in Sweetwater.
Survivors include sons Ronald and wife Betty Dement of Burnet and Jerry and wife Linda Dement of Universal City; grandchildren Autumn and husband Billy Cooke of San Antonio and Ronald Dement Jr. of Abilene; great-granddaughter Kenzie Cooke of San Antonio; brother-in-law Allen Hull of Rotan; sister-in-law Peggy Dement of Lubbock; stepsons Jerry and wife Shirlene Gage of Abilene and Dalton and wife Kitty Gage of Lubbock; step-grandchildren Rusty Gage of Hawaii, Corey Gage of Cedar Park, Wendy Cox of Hico and Amber Easley of Lubbock; seven step-great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by triplet sisters and brother as infants; brother, Bernie DeShazo; and her parents.
Visitation is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008.
A funeral service is 10 a.m. Dec. 21 at the funeral home with the Rev. Ellen Ely officiating.
