John Miloy, 83, of Burnet died Nov. 29, 2011, following a long illness.

He was the son of Jovan Miloyevich and Helen Srdich of Flint, Mich., and was born in 1927. He graduated as a star athlete from Flint Northern High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served in Alaska until the end of World War II.

In 1951 he moved to Texas and married Leatha Hill of Bryan in 1960. They moved to California where he worked as a financial analyst and broker.

The family returned to Texas in 1962. He worked for many years at Texas A&M University as a research economist and as a Sea Grant Program principal investigator before moving to Austin in 1980. At the Texas Coastal and Marine Council he served as program director and later worked with the Texas Water Division Board before his retirement in 1991.

In 1996 he was named to the Lower Colorado River Authority citizen advisory board. He was also a long-standing member of the Kingsland Community Center board of directors. He was active in neighborhood programs, serving on the Buena Vista Property Owners Association Board. In recent months he participated in the Burnet-Llano County Regional Water Facility Study.

He was the author of many journal articles and technical reports including the book “Creating the College of the Sea,” published in 1983.

He held a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University.

Professional memberships include the Southern Industrial Development Council, Texas Academy of Science, Texas Industrial Development Council, Marine Technology Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He served as chairman at the Ocean Policy and Marine Resource Council.

Survivors include his wife Leatha Miloy; children Tyler Miloy and  Nancy Miloy Clemmer, both of Austin, and David Miloy of Kerrville; grandchildren Kayla Miloy, Molly LePori, Miranda Miloy and Thomas LePori, all of Austin; great-grandchild Charlie Patterson of Austin; and sisters Violet Piotrowski of Saranac, Mich., and Dorothy Suess of Flint, Michigan.

The family will receive friends at his home on Inks Lake at 2 p.m. Dec. 11 for a celebration of his life.
