Robert Newton Jones, 81, of Sunrise Beach died Nov. 29, 2011. He was born on May 13, 1930, in Knott to Samuel Bennett and Thelma Leona Layfield Jones.

He served in the Air Force. He married Mary Lee Harlow at Corinth Baptist Church near Cisco on Aug. 27, 1955.

He graduated from Cisco High School in 1947. He graduated college with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum geology from Texas Tech University in 1956. He then worked as an on-site oil field geologist for several years.  After leaving the oil field, he worked for Texas Farm Bureau Insurance as a claims supervisor for 32 years and retired in 1992.

He was a member of the Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 655 in Vernon, a charter member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Lubbock; a former president of the Lubbock Gem and Mineral Society; a precinct chairman for the Republican State Committee; and a former municipal judge for the city of Sunrise Beach.

He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter.

Survivors include his wife Mary Lee Jones of Sunrise Beach; son Bobby Jones of Austin; daughter Vicki and husband George Spillman of San Antonio; grandchildren Leslie Rigge and Lindsey Spillman, both of San Antonio; brother Sam Jones of Eastland; sisters Joy Beth Hanson and Betty Nell Payne of Midland and Kathie Platt of Austin; 13 nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by sister Patsy Fay Jones.

A visitation is 2-5 p.m. Dec. 2 at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008. A service is 11 a.m. Dec. 3 at Corinth Baptist Church, 154 Eastland CR in Cisco.

Burial will follow in Eastland City Cemetery.
