Joyce Milam

Joyce Milam, 92, of Kingsland died Nov. 2, 2011. She was born July 7, 1919, in Des Moines, N.M., to Corwin and Loa Black.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1940 and began a teaching career in home economics at a small school near Snyder. While teaching at the school, she met and fell in love with Bert Milam, the school’s principal. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married Nov. 29, 1941.
She continued teaching in many schools in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado, retiring in 1978 after a 20-year teaching position at an elementary school in Golden, Colo.
After her husband retired from a drafting engineer position at the Coors Porcelain Co. in Golden, the couple enjoyed traveling the United States, Mexico and Canada and building a rock and jewelry business in Denver.
They moved from Denver to Buchanan Dam and then to Kingsland in 1980, where they enjoyed the mild climate, being close to relatives, many great small-town activities and fishing opportunities.
Her husband of 54 years died in February 1994 from complications due to congestive heart failure.
Survivors include her son Loyd Milam and wife Donna of Kingsland; daughter Judy Denton and husband Lynn of Austin; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Keith Black and his wife Dorris; grandson Heath Denton; and great-grandson Dane Lewis.
Visitation is 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008. A service is 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet.
