Lady Mustangs get ‘necessary win’ against Vipers
MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School volleyball team earned its first District 25-4A win of the 2011 season Sept. 16.
The Lady Mustangs (15-11, 1-1) defeated Leander Vandegrift 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.
“We came to win,” Lady Mustangs coach Julie Downs said. “We got it done.”
The final set was a challenge because Marble Falls struggled offensively, she said.
“We got into weak serve-receive patterns, and it took some points to get us out of it,” Downs said. “The Vipers were a tough-serving team. They could execute their offense, especially on the outside line.”
She credited outside hitter Jasmine Mobley, who finished plays and gave her team valuable points. Mobley recorded six kills.
Downs didn’t say this victory was a big win.
“Necessary win,” she said. “This was one of those ‘we have to win.'”
Junior outside hitter Kiara Etheridge led with 13 kills, while junior middle blocker Jessica Winn added seven and junior outside hitter Hayley Fishbeck finished with six. Sophomore setter Haley Coulter earned 16 assists, while junior setter Emily Chittum added 12.
Junior libero Stephanie Garcia recorded 26 digs, while Etheridge added 12.
The Lady Mustangs junior varsity team won 18-25, 25-19, 26-24, while the Marble Falls freshmen lost 17-25, 26-24, 23-25.
The Lady Mustangs host Cedar Park High at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive.
