After three years, Mustangs claim win over cross-county rivals Burnet
BURNET — Clinging to a 28-21 lead, the Marble Falls High School football team looked to dash the last hopes of the Burnet Bulldogs during their homecoming Friday.
And dash those hopes they did, with a final score of 35-21 and the Mustangs’ first victory over their traditional cross-county rivals since 2008.
The Mustang win (3-0) over Burnet (1-2) was the first time Marble Falls had won on Burnet’s home field since 1993. The rivalry stretches back a century.
The Mustang victory started on fourth and 11 from the Burnet 22, when senior quarterback Zed Woerner dropped back to pass and found senior receiver Ryan Garcia running near the left sideline. The Burnet cornerback tipped the ball, but Garcia never took his eyes off the pigskin and hauled it in as he was falling in the end zone.
Ball game.
