MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls High School athletes enjoy competing and prepare as much as they can to put themselves in a position to be successful.

So during the Labor Day holiday when neighbors at Spicewood and Lakeway were battling fires, the Marble Falls High School volleyball program decided to help the Lake Travis volleyball team in a fundraiser.

They heard the Lady Cavs were gathering water and Gatorade for victims and emergency personnel and asked head coach Julie Downs if they could donate to the cause.

After getting approval, the players decided to ask the community for help.

“We thought we would just surprise them with an immense amount of water and Gatorade,” Downs said. “Everyone is talking about gathering that up. Two of our parents have offered to deliver that for us because there’s not adequate space on the bus. So that’s our goal … to help them fill their gym with water and Gatorade.”

The Lady Mustangs will travel to face the Lady Cavs, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A and No. 1 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. The match is 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9.

Before the contest starts, however, Downs said her players planned on giving the supplies to the Lady Cavs in the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship.

The Lady Mustangs invite the community to bring water or Gatorade to Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive, or give money so the program can buy the supplies.

“Whatever they feel they want to contribute or however they want to contribute,” Downs said. “I think it’s such a devastating event. Our kids have been very touched by it, and the kids actually brought it to my attention that they wanted to do something. I wasn’t aware of this. I am so fortunate to be around children like that. And I think it’s awesome, so we definitely want to support what they think is important as well.”
