Robert Earl James Jr., 73, of Spicewood died Aug. 12, 2011, in Houston. He was born in Shreveport, La., on Sept. 12, 1937, to Robert E. Sr. and Ahmonilla (Howell) James.

He previously lived in Pasadena, but he lived in Spicewood for the last 12 years.

He graduated from Pasadena High School in 1956 and attended Central Technical Institute. He married his high school sweetheart Alta Marie Smedley on Jan. 25, 1956.

He was a State Farm agent for 31 years in Pasadena and had been retired for the last 12 years.

He was a 31-year member of the Pasadena Noon Optimist Club and was a 12-year member of Spicewood Baptist Church.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping and golf.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, survivors include sons Robert E. James III and wife Cherie, and Greg A. James Sr., all of LaPorte, and Scott D. James and wife Rita of Spicewood; brother Ormond James; sister Ahmonilla Nichols; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Oscar James Sr.; and daughter-in-law Janis K. James.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Aug. 16 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls, (830) 693-4373.

A service is 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Spicewood Baptist Church, 7903 CR 404 in Spicewood, with the Rev. Bill McCormick officiating.

Interment will follow at Haynie Flat Cemetery in Spicewood.

Pallbearers include Andrew Benavides, Gregory James Jr., Randy Wheat, Robert Wheat, Mat Payne, Bobby James, Philip Carr and Stacy Graham. Honorary pallbearers include Ray Canales, Billy Perez, Troy Middleton, Roger Criswell and Eddie James.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or Spicewood Baptist Church.
