BURNET — During the first week of two-a-days, Burnet High School volleyball coach Bethany Grissom noted there were more questions than answers about her squad.

But in the team’s first scrimmage against Leander Vandegrift, Cedar Ridge and Elgin, Grissom got some answers.

“They faced good hitters,” she said. “They’re talented hitters. I think we got some answers. We definitely need to work on serve-receive.”

That’s the basis of the offense. Without serve-receive, the Lady Dawgs will struggle.

Grissom added she saw plenty of good things, too.

“I thought they looked better than I expected so early,” she said. “I knew we were going to be rusty. They get out and play no matter what.”

Freshman middle blocker Sarah Poe is developing nicely.

“Our new freshman is really stepping up,” Grissom said. “Every time she steps on the floor, she learns something new. She’s done a good job.”

Cassidy Connolly, who was sidelined with a foot injury has been cleared to play, though Grissom said she wasn’t sure when the senior hitter would be on the court. Connolly missed the first week of practice.

Burnet will face Marble Falls at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Max Copeland Gym on the Marble Falls High School campus, 2101 Mustang Drive.
