Nancy Garton Kendrick
Nancy Garton Kendrick, 83, died April 22, 2011, in Corpus Christi. She was born in Pelham, N.Y., on May 1, 1927, to Harold William and Mary Merklee Garton.
She graduated from Pelham Memorial High School as salutatorian and reagent scholar. She received a liberal arts degree from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, graduating with magna cum laude honors.
She was an avid sailor in her youth on Lake Green Pond, N.J. As a member of the Green Pond Yacht Club sailing team, she mastered sailing a class of boats called Comets.
Her career with Foley’s Department Store as a buyer for children’s apparel brought her to Texas, where she stayed.
She also was an accomplished bridge player and received the Life Masters Bridge Award from the American Bridge Association.
Survivors include her brother Bill Garton of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; sister Marjorie Monski of Winter Haven, Fla.; sons Bruce Ellsworth and wife Melody of Brisbane, Australia, Hal W. Ellsworth of Llano and Hank P. Ellsworth and wife Kathleen of Corpus Christi; and grandchildren Shelby Clare Ellsworth of Llano, Preston Ley and wife Ashley of Corpus Christi, Kirsten Klabonski and husband Mat of Dallas and Winston Ley of San Antonio.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Brown B. Kendrick.
The family thanks all of her caregivers at Holmgreen Center and Vista Care, especially Betty, Alma and “little” Alma.
