Elizabeth Ann ‘Betty’ Van Gorkom
Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Van Gorkom, 88, of Burnet died April 18, 2011.
She was devoted to her family. She and husband John were married 61 years. For many years, she volunteered in the Burnet community at the Herman Brown Free Library, thrift shop and Angel Food Ministry.
She also was artistic. Many of her paintings grace the homes of family and friends. She was an excellent seamstress who created beautiful clothes, blankets and dolls. She also displayed her crafts in the arts and crafts shops in the community.
In her youth, she studied to be a nurse. After raising four children, she and her husband traveled across the United States in their motor home. They also extensively traveled internationally, with Australia being a favorite destination.
She always was there when her family needed help or support. She was an independent person who enjoyed her family home in Burnet, which she and her husband designed.
She was very interested in genealogy and traced the family’s lineage back hundreds of years.
They had four children Karen, John, Carl and Eric. In addition, she was known as “Super Grandma” to her 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson.
A service is 11 a.m. June 4 at First United Methodist Church, 301 E. Graves St. in Burnet. Attendees may share special memories or stories, either poignant or humorous about her, at the tribute or send them to bettyvgmemorial@gmail.com.
Since she loved cheerful colors, the family encourages all to wear bright colors at the celebration.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Herman Brown Free Library Building Fund, P.O. Box 1265, Burnet, TX 78611, www.burnetlibrary.com.
