Lola Maxine Harrell Wells
Lloyd Douglas Sullivan Sr., 69, died March 8, 2011, in Burnet. He was born Aug. 10, 1942, in Meridian, Miss., the son of Sally Sullivan and Gilbert Sullivan.
He graduated from Provine High School in Jackson, Miss., received an associate’s degree in music from Hinds Junior College and then earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Louisiana State University. He was in the University Choir.
He received a master’s degree in music education from Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.
He was the choral music teacher in Vicksburg, Miss., then later established the choral music program at Moss Point, Miss., where his choir was judged superior for several years. In 1984 he moved to Palestine, where he began the choral program at Westwood Junior and Senior High schools. After 10 years he moved to Burnet and served as the director of choral music for the high school and the middle school.
He also served as the international choir chairman for the American Choral Directors Association.
He retired in 2004 after 37 years in public education, but continued to teach for Central Texas College until his death.
He was also a minister of music for First Baptist Church of Palestine and First Baptist Church of Burnet.
After retiring, he dedicated himself to golf. It was his goal to shoot his age in golf, a feat he failed to accomplish, missing it by one stroke on one occasion.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Margaret Caperton Sullivan; son L. Douglas Sullivan Jr. of Houston; daughter Ellen Smith and husband Kirk of Little Elm; grandson Noah Smith; his mother of Madison, Miss.; brother Herbert Sullivan and wife Liz of Jackson, Miss.; sister Beverly Wilson and husband Bill of Starkville; sister-in-law Pat Sullivan of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his oldest brother Jerry and niece Cindy Wilson, both of Houston.
Services were March 11 at First Baptist Church in Burnet.
In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be sent to the music program at the church.
