Gladys Beck, 82, died Feb. 17, 2011, in Round Rock after a brief illness. She was born Dora Gladys Mills on May 4, 1928, in Vernon, the tenth of 10 children to Fred and Mary Edna Mills.  

She graduated from Oklaunion High School in Oklaunion in 1946. In October of that year she married Pat Beck when he returned from Korea. They moved to Stephenville to attend Tarleton State University, where they met and developed a lifelong a friendship with Betty and Jack Holt.

After working in several clerical and administrative positions, she discovered her talent and love for the savings and loan business She was employed by the Vernon Savings & Loan. 

 

She was working for Abilene Savings and Loan when the couple decided to move to Round Rock to become cottage parents at Texas Baptist Children’s Home.  

It was during the three years at the children’s home they fell in love with their foster daughter, who has remained an important part of their lives.  

Upon leaving the children’s home, she was employed by First Federal Savings & Loan in Austin, where she rose to vice president and developed a friendship with Bobbie Clark Henry.  

The couple retired to the Woodlands Baptist Retirement Community.  

Survivors include brother Manual D. Mills  and wife Billie of Midland; sister Wilma Banks of Altus, Okla.; daughter Tricia Reid and husband Scott of Round Rock; son Richard Beck and wife Kim of Breckenridge; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and foster daughter Lori Lopez and her son and daughter. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; a sister; and her  husband.  

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Lighthouse at Altenheim Hospice in Round Rock. The family also wishes to thank her many friends at the Woodlands.
