Alvin Julius McNabb, 88, of Spring died Feb. 7, 2011. He was born Jan. 5, 1923, to Jack and Lizzie (Bartz) McNabb at Fort Worth.

He served in the Army during World War II as a tank driver. He was injured by fragments of an exploding grenade and was awarded the Purple Heart. His grandchildren enjoyed learning from his war stories as much as he loved telling them.

He retired from Valero and moved with his wife to Lake LBJ on the waterfront in Kingsland. He was a member of the Kingsland First Baptist Church. He loved to fish and loved the Hill Country. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his sons James Kays of Kosse, Freddie D. Kays of Cross Lanes, W.Va., Alvin J. McNabb Jr. of Hallettsville; daughter Marilyn A. Schulte of Spring; son-in-law Charles Fenner of Highland Haven; brothers Tommy McNabb and wife Ollie of Corpus Christi and Sammy McNabb and wife Ester of San Antonio; sisters Etta Moore of Sinton and Billie May Sheets of Robstown; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel C. McNabb; daughter Nancy J. Fenner; son Billy J. Kays;  sister Louise Henneke; father Jack McNabb and mother Lizzie Bartz.

Visitation was Feb. 11 at Putnam Funeral Home & Crematory, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008.

A service was Feb. 12 at First Baptist Church, 295 E. Chester Ave. in Kingsland, with the Rev. Bubba Stahl and Pastor Kenneth “Too Tall” Robinson officiating. Interment followed at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park with the Highland Lakes Honor Guard rendering military honors.
