Monica Ann Figun

Retired Air Force Col. Monica Ann Figun, 63, of Kingsland died Sept. 25, 2010. Born Sept. 11, 1947, in Chula Vista, Calif., she was the daughter of Lt. Col. Charles and Lorraine (Bogan) Wolfe.
She graduated from Mercy Nursing School in San Diego, Calif., in 1968 as a registered nurse. She was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1973. She earned her flight nurse wings in 1974, and in 1976 she completed her training as a primary-care nurse practitioner.
She earned her bachelor of science and master of science degrees while on active duty and progressed from chief nurse at Reese Air Force Base to hospital commander.
Promoted to colonel, she took command of the Tinker AFB, Okla., hospital, and upon her retirement in 2001, she commanded the Eglin AFB, Fla., Regional Hospital. Her Air Force awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak-leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak-leaf clusters, the Air Force Achievement Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
After retiring from the Air Force, she worked until 2008 as vice president of clinical services at a hospital in Austin. She was very active in her parish church, Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Marble Falls, helping others as a member of the ACTS team, Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Gabriel Project.
Survivors include husband Stephen Figun of Kingsland; sons Mark Figun and wife Kristy of Wilmington, Del., and Matthew Figun of Kingsland; daughters Joanne Figun of Wilmington, Del., and Sara Figun of Kingsland; mother Lorraine Wolfe of Niceville, Fla.; and grandchildren Corey and Hanna.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at St. John’s.
A funeral Mass with military honors will be celebrated 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at the church with the Rev. Jairo Lopez officiating.
