Vonnie Lewis

Vonnie Lewis, 88, died Sept. 21, 2010. She was born in McLennan County in 1921 to Ruby Merritt Franklin and Glen Franklin.
She was educated in McLennan County, Hill Country and Waco public schools, graduating from Waco High School in 1940.
In 1942, she married her sweetheart Robert L. “Bob” Lewis in Austin.
She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ and attended Brentwood and University Avenue Churches of Christ in Austin, as well as Churches of Christ in Kerrville, Marble Falls and Belton.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, her professional career spanned 34 years. She was secretary and assistant for a Texas state treasurer, four Texas state representatives and a Texas Supreme Court justice.
She served as Texas House of Representatives committee clerk for the House Elections committee from 1978-1981 and committee clerk for the House Calendars Committee from 1981-1983, when she retired. At her retirement, she was awarded a Texas House of Representatives Proclamation presented to her by the presiding Texas speaker of the House.
In addition to her husband, survivors include daughters Ann Miech and Dedra Mergele and their husbands; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother Horace Franklin and his family.
A funeral service is 10 a.m. Sept. 23 in the chapel at Dossman Funeral Home, 2525 N. Main in Belton, with the Rev. Joe Baisden, formerly of the Belton Church of Christ, officiating.
Interment follows at 2 p.m. at Capital Memorial Park in Austin.
