Ray Butler, 84, of Horseshoe Bay died Sept. 10, 2010. Born Feb. 26, 1926, in Rising Star, he was the son of Thomas G. Butler and Hazel (Wiginton) Butler.

He and his twin brother Roy joined the Navy on their 17th birthdays.

He attended training at Southwestern University. He served on the U.S.S. Springfield in the South Pacific during World War II as a lieutenant-junior grade.

Upon his return, he graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering.

He went into the oil business in South Texas where he had a career with Harkins & Co. as president and chairman of the board.

He served as president of the International Association of Drilling Contractors and was chairman of the board of Alice National Bank. He was recognized by Texas Tech as a distinguished engineer and a distinguished alumnus.

He served in many capacities at First United Methodist Church in Alice. He was a lifelong golfer and a licensed pilot. He will be remembered as humble, benevolent, loving and patriotic.

Survivors include his wife Sue (Lawson) Butler of Horseshoe Bay; daughter Amy Butler Lightfoot and husband Ron of Kerrville; granddaughters Ashley Dietz Inscoe and husband Turner of Birmingham, Ala., and  Ainsley Nicole Dietz of Austin; grandson Ryan Ray Butler of Corpus Christi; great-grandsons James Turner Inscoe Jr. and Vann Butler Inscoe, both of Birmingham; twin brother of Horseshoe Bay; daughter-in-law Laura Butler of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law Jennie Lawson of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Keith Butler; son Kelly Brent Butler; sister-in-law Lou Butler; and brother-in-law Bernie Lawson.

A memorial service is 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge, with the reverends Pete Christy and Johnny White officiating.
