Margaret Fern Rhodes Winfrey, 97, died Aug. 8, 2010, in Llano with family by her side.  She was born Oct. 14, 1912, in Ballinger to Henry and Maude Irene Buchanan Rhodes.

She was two months shy of her 98th birthday.

The Rhodes moved to Brady where she attended Brady schools and where, while attending Brady High School, she met Crawford Winfrey.

On Oct. 21, 1933, they “tied the knot” and settled into their first home on China Street.  She worked at Brady National Bank and in 1934 gave birth to their first child.

After World War II, the couple moved to Llano, where they opened and operated The Man’s Store on the town Square; she was the bookkeeper and telegraph operator.

The couple entered a new phase of family life in Llano with the addition of more children from 1947-1954.

By the mid-1950s, they had restored their 1890’s-era house on East Green Street.  Their home was only a stone’s throw from the Llano schools and the First Presbyterian Church.

She and her family appreciated the care she received from the staff at Care Inn of Llano.

Survivors include daughters Janice Crenwelge of Llano, Nancy Scott and husband Tom, and  Ann Brown and husband Larry, all of Bastrop; sons Kirk Winfrey and his wife Marilyn of Llano and Lin Winfrey and wife Jan of Fredericksburg; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994.

A funeral service is 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone, Llano, (325) 247-4300.

Burial will follow at the Llano City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Llano First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 385, Llano, TX 78643 or to the Llano County Special Opportunity Center, 206 Main, Llano, TX 78643.
