Ernest L. Singleton
Ernest L. Singleton, 90, died July 22, 2010, at his home in Bertram. He was born May 16, 1920, at Travis Peak in Travis County to Waller Wright and Lillie (Varner) Singleton.
He spent his childhood in Oatmeal and in Bertram, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He excelled on the football team.
He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and joined the Army Air Corps in 1940. He was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. It was there he met and later married Louise “Weesie” Green on Christmas Eve 1941.
They were married for almost 57 years before she died October 1998.
He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and retired as a master sergeant in 1960 after 20 years as an aircraft mechanic.
Afterwards, he worked 10 years in civil service.
The couple moved back to Texas in 1974. They lived in Bertram for a year before moving to Avalon, where he ran the water department until retiring again. He then worked there for the cotton gin.
After 18 years in Avalon, they moved back to Bertram.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tending to the livestock he and his brother Steve had when he lived in Avalon.
He was an avid reader and had a notable sense of humor .
Survivors include his sons Eddie Singleton of Bertram and Don Singleton and wife Lisa of Cedar Hill; daughter Mackie Hollis of LaPorte; sister Lillie Fay Hopkins of Bertram and his brother Steve Singleton and wife Reba of Cedar Hill; four grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; eight great-grandsons; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Alfred.
A family visitation was July 25 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 E. Polk St. in Burnet, (512) 756-2222.
A graveside service and interment is July 26 at Travis Peak Cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Debo officiating.
Pallbearers include Matthew Sonka, Jeff Sonka, Eric Singleton, Nolan Singleton, Charles Hopkins, Glen Hopkins, Jerry Hopkins Gary Don Hopkins and honorary pallbearer Kevin Westen.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to any charity or organization benefiting children.
