Margie Paralee Jones McDougald

Margie Paralee Jones McDougald, 88, of Kingsland died June 28, 2010. She was born to Blakely and Lucy Paralee (Eakin) Jones on Aug. 16, 1921, in Brown County.
After losing her mother at age 3 and her father at 7, she was reared by her aunt and uncle in Williams.
She graduated from Williams High School as the Class of 1939 valedictorian. In June 1939, she moved to Fort Stockton where her oldest brother found her a job. She soon met Woodrow "Woody" McDougald and they married Dec. 3, 1939.
They attended a variety of Christian denomination worship services and chose to join the Church of Christ, making fast friends with many couples. She became a true scholar of the King James Bible. Five months before Pearl Harbor, she had their first daughter on July 4, 1942.
Her husband went to the Pacific Theater during World War II and she worked at Safeway as an assistant butcher. She took care of their daughter, bought a house and started saving to invest in a business when her husband returned. Once he was back, they bought a business and she had another daughter, and later a son, and continued to work.
She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1956-1957. She was active in the Church of Christ and taught Sunday school. She was a room mother for all three of her children, helped with ice-cream socials, volunteer fire department events, hunting and fishing trips, worked as a bookkeeper and was a successful Avon representative.
In 1959, the couple bought a few acres on Lake Granite Shoals and established Fisherman’s Haven. The office/café combination was named the Snack Shack and was the only eatery on the north end of Lake LBJ, as renamed from Lake Granite Shoals. She served countless hamburgers to skiers, fishermen, President Lyndon B. Johnson, his bodyguards and regulars for decades.
Her cooking brought their fishing camp business through the early years of a 50-year operation. Her sense of humor was matchless, she possessed a world-class beauty, always worked hard, and was proud of her independence and competence.
But most of all, she was a true Christian woman and left this world at peace.
Survivors include her children Woodette Denene McEvers, Pamela Kay Fowler and Woodrow Craig McDougald, all of Kingsland; granddaughters, Deanna Singletary of Waco, Brandy Finnessey of Austin, Laina Moomaw of Houston; grandsons Corwin Blake McEvers of Crandall, Jay McEvers of Austin, Kenneth Fowler of Llano, Broderick McDougald of Manor, Clay Fowler of Scottsdale, Ariz., Clinton Matcek of Smithwick and Westin Cross of Kingsland; great-grandchildren Drew Bishop, Kymberly Sams-Garza, Amy and Wesley Fowler, Aedan Ruth Fowler, Michaella and Megan Matcek, Emily, Reese, Addie Caroline Moomaw and Ethan Finnessey; great-great-grandchildren Bryan and Chloe Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews.
