BURNET — Fans who follow Burnet and Llano high school sports aren’t surprised Tuesday’s District 8-3A baseball contest was decided in extra innings.
Not when both head coaches complimented the pitching staffs of their opponents.
And credited the batters for coming through at the most opportune moments.
So an 8-7 win in extra innings illustrates the talents of both baseball teams, coaches said.
The Llano Yellowjackets (8-5, 1-1 in district) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
But the Bulldogs (15-5 overall, 1-0 in district) answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning and added a run in the second
Both squads scored a run in the third, giving Burnet a 7-3 lead headed into the fourth.
But Llano wasn’t done.
The Yellowjackets tied the contest with four runs in the fifth.
That score stood until junior Emil Litterer recorded the game-winning hit to score junior Grant Martin, who began the inning with a triple.
Senior Gregg Parker added home run No. 3 to highlight a night where he went 3-for-3 from the plate. Parker was intentionally walked twice.
Pitcher Litterer earned the win with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Bulldogs recorded 10 hits to Llano’s seven.
The Bulldogs will host Leander Vandegrift 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bulldog Diamonds, 1000 The Green Mile.
