Bulldogs send Wildcats back to the kitty pool

BURNET — After taking 15th place at the 2008 Austin Independent School District Capitol City Swim Classic last week, the Burnet High School swim team beat Elgin High School in a dual meet conducted Nov. 11.

The Bulldogs scored 739 overall points for the win against Elgin, which scored 542 points overall.

The Bulldogs bested Elgin, 378-207, and the Lady Dawgs also beat the Lady Wildcats, 361-335.

Burnet swimmers of the meet were sophomores Travis Justus and Kalee Smith, with “amazing swims” in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke, respectively, according to head coach Nancy Moore. 

Last week, Justus swam a 1: 28.61 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke finals, and Smith posted a time of 1:45.10 in the 100-yard backstroke finals.

At the Austin ISD Capitol City Classic, the Bulldogs finished 10th overall with 38 points in a field that included 26 teams. Burnet competed in the finals of 10 of the 24 events.

Sophomore Joe Robertson was second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.95 seconds and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.87. Robertson was named Burnet’s male swimmer of the meet.

The Lady Dawgs scored two points and finished 25th. The Lady Dawgs competed in the finals for six of the 24 events. 

Junior Tiffany Revay was 12th, sophomore Rebekah Sorrells finished 20th and senior Kim Cornelius finished 26th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:35.59, 2:49.84 and 3:06.79, respectively. 

Burnet will host the 4A Southern Zone Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Invitational Nov. 21  with 24 public and private schools from around the state. 

Participants scheduled to compete include Killeen, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Hutto, Liberty Hill and Lake Travis high schools.

Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m., and finals will be conducted Nov. 22, with diving scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. and swimming to begin at 11:15 a.m. 

All events will be held at the Tex Robertson Natatorium in the Galloway-Hammond Recreation Center, 1601 South Water Street in Burnet.

Nancy Moore is in her first season as coach of the Bulldogs. She replaced Josh Hamm, who resigned to be closer to his family. 

The Bulldogs are set to host three more meets before district preliminaries Jan. 30.
