BURNET — Burnet residents are invited to a free barbecue lunch Feb. 24 hosted by two city and school leaders who will each give a “State of the Community” address.
Led by Mayor Gary Wideman and Burnet Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Keith McBurnett, the event is at the Burnet Community Center, 401 E. Jackson St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at noon.
“I think at the end of the day, what it comes down to are taxpayers,” Wideman said. “We have a responsibility with the money they give us. If we don’t do this, it’s hard to tell them what the city and school district are doing. I think it’s important we let them know.”
“What’s true of this community is that city and Burnet CISD are very important to this community,” McBurnett said. “There’s no RSVP and free barbecue. You can’t beat that.”
Several city projects are happening, and Wideman will give attendees an update. One he will talk about is the My Town project, which allows families to purchase starter homes at affordable prices. Several families have already taken advantage of the program, and it illustrates a great partnership between the Burnet Economic Development Corp. and local homebuilders, the mayor said.
McBurnett said he will give updates on bond projects and highlight the successes of the school year.
In addition to getting an update on issues affecting the city and BCISD, attendees also will be able to meet employees from both entities so they can put names and faces to the people there who help them with any issues.
“Anytime you get a chance to meet face to face, it makes for a better connection with our community,” McBurnett said.
“We want folks to know you have responsible leadership,” Wideman said. “We’re working to make Burnet a better place. And the guys at public works can cook barbecue.”
