The Granite Shoals City Council wants residents to be in the know about the proposed 2023-24 tax rate. A special open forum meeting is 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Fire Station, 8410 RR 1431.

“We want to get input and allow our residents to voice their concerns or ideas about the (proposed) tax rate,” Mayor Kiel Arnone told DailyTrib.com. “It’s also about education on the tax rate and how we came up with the number.”

Arnone said the council is considering a rate of $0.508 per $100 property valuation, a roughly 10.5 percent decrease from the 2022 tax rate of $0.568 per $100 property valuation. He made sure to note that the rate has not been officially approved and can be changed.

The city had a significant leap in taxable property value, according to the Burnet Central Appraisal District. Values rose 24.25 percent to $971,313,867 in 2023 from $781,740,710 in 2022.

The leap in property values likely means tax bills could be higher than in 2022, even if the tax rate falls significantly. If the $0.508 per $100 rate is approved, it will be the lowest tax rate the city has seen since at least 2014.
