The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Highland Lakes on Aug. 31.

The advisory is in effect 1-8 p.m. Monday. Highs are expected to reach the upper 90s to triple digits with a heat index of up to 113 degrees.

Be cautious if you are outdoors during these hours. If possible, stay in an air-conditioned space. If outside, the NWS recommends drinking plenty of water.

Also, do not leave children or pets in vehicles. The NWS recommends people check on neighbors or relatives, especially those who have health issues or don’t have air conditioning.

Other tips include:

  • when possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening;
  • know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke;
  • wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing;
  • and if working outside, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
