Lady Mustangs power forward Aubree Adams to play at UT-Tyler

MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls High School senior forward Aubree Adams fulfilled a dream Jan. 11 when she signed her National Letter of Intent to play college basketball.
Adams will attend the University of Texas at Tyler, an NCAA Division III program that plays in the American Southwest Conference. Last year, the Patriots won the conference regular season championship and tournament, reached the NCAA Division III tournament’s Elite Eight, and finished the season ranked No. 5 nationally.
“I love the (UT-Tyler) coaches. They helped me a lot through the recruiting process,” Adams said. “The campus is very pretty, and they’re a very successful, winning program. I feel like I can help.”
The four-year Lady Mustang letterman is a starting power forward but can also play guard. Her versatility is what made college coaches take notice.
The daughter of Krysta and Chris Adams plans to major in psychology, just like her mother. Adams also thanked her Little Dribblers coach Jose Gonzales, a MFISD special education teacher, who always reminded his players to have fun while they played.
Growing up, Adams looked up to former Lady Mustang Sarah Stripling, who graduated in 2014. Stripling was much like Adams: a do-it-all player who was unafraid of taking the game-winning shot and played her best when the team needed her.
But those aren’t the only reasons Adams enjoyed watching Stripling.
“On the court, she always had a smile on her face,” she said with a smile. “Even now, I still look up to her.”
Last season, the Lady Mustangs qualified for the playoffs after finishing second in District 26-5A, their first appearance in the postseason since Stripling’s 2010-11 squad. The 2016-17 season ended in a Class 5A Region IV loss to Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, 46-28.
For Adams, the 2016-17 season was especially sweet. She remembered being on the varsity as a freshman when the team went 7-23 and winless in District 25-5A.
Currently, the Lady Mustangs are 17-9 overall and atop the District 26-5A standings at 6-0. They will end the first round of district play against Dripping Springs (20-8, 5-1) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.
“It’s so amazing how things have progressed over the years,” Adams said. “In a four-year span, things have changed incredibly. You have to put in your own work.”
Marble Falls head coach John Berkman said Adams is known for going to many open gyms and playing on select teams to improve her game.
“It’s paid off,” he said. “We’re extremely proud of her.”
