LLANO — A jury has been seated and opening statements are underway May 19 in the murder trial of Karra Trichele Allen, accused of sending phone text messages warning she would kill her husband before she shot him in the back, officials said.

The venue of the case being tried in the 33rd/424th Judicial District was changed from Burnet to the Llano County Courthouse.

Authorities found the body of 38-year-old Brian Dean Allen on the night of July 1, 2013, at the couple’s residence in the 1400 block of CR 320, located near Bertram.

Investigators contend Allen had provided hints in advance about her intent to shoot her husband in a cellphone exchange with a friend, documents showed.

Despite the text messages, she claimed she shot her husband in self-defense, according to the investigation.

Excerpts of the 9-1-1 tape revealed Allen told the dispatcher her husband produced a gun, she took it away and shot him in the back.

At the time, her defense attorney had described her as a “battered woman.”
